Shaheed Bhai Nirmal Singh Chola Sahib

Kavisheri and Dhadi Jathas play a major role in waking up the sleeping Sikhs. When Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji started equipping Sikhs with weapons and at that time Guru Ji also made Dhadi Jathas, who gave courage to the Sikh youth. Due to these Kavisher and Dhadi Jathas the Sikhs became fearless and faught against the injustice of the Mughal empire. The Mughals knew that they were being defeated by the Sikhs due to the courageous hymns of the Dhadi Jathas, but still the Mughals did not take their anger of defeat out on these Jathas. However the secular Hindu government of India did not do this, when the Singhni Jatha of Nabha were singing hymns of Sikh shaheeds and awakening many Sikhs, the Indian security charged this Jatha of Sikh women with many fake cases and tortured them brutally. We are going to share a story of a Kavisher, who was brutally killed by the police of India for singing about the Shaheeds of Sikh Freedom Movement.

Bhai Nirmal Singh was born in the house of Sardar Sucha Singh and from the womb of Mata Tej Kaur, in the village of Bhail, near Goindwal Sahib. Bhai Sahib was the youngest brother of the six sisters and had a great interest in Kavisheri since childhood. Bhai Sahib was also had a great interest in listening to Kavisheris of shaheed singhs. Bhai Sahib got married to Bibi Daler Kaur in the year of 1979 and by now Bhai Sahib was regularly meeting Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Bhindranwale. As Bhai Sahib witnessed the bravery of many singhs of the Sikh Freedom Movement, he started to write about the bravery of the singhs. First Bhai Sahib joined Bhai Jageer Singh Mast, Bhai Jarnail Singh Gudiwind, and Bhai Sulakhan Singh Kula and sang Kavisheris of Jhujaru Singhs. Then soon Bhai Sahib made his own Jatha. The shahadats of singhs in the Sikh Freedom Movement made Bhai Sahib write about the injustice of the Indian government and the bravery of the singhs, which were later sang on stages. Whatever money the Sikh sangat gave Bhai Sahib, he would use that to support his wife and children.

On 2rdNovember 1990, general of Bhindranwale Tigers Force, Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Sangha attained shaheedi in one of the great encounters of the Sikh Freedom Movement. The police officer responsible for the shahadat of Shaheed Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Sangha was SP Operation Harjit Singh. Then on 24thNovember 1990, the singhs avenged the shaheedi of Bhai Sangha and blew up the vehicle SP Operation was sitting in. Bhai Sahib wrote a great Kavisheri Vaar on Bhai Sangha’s revenge:

Chovi November Nu Puray Noh Soobha De Vaje

Sanghay De Badlay Lai Major Singh Hoori Aa Gaje.

Aakhaya Khadkua Ehnoo Sodhan Lai Lagan Na Deraan

SP Operation Da Karta Si Operation Shera.

This vaar was hugely loved and respected by the Sikh nation. By now Bhai Sahib was being watched and envied by the Indian government. If the Indian police arrested Bhai Sahib then it would seem that India is against the freedom of speech, but the cruel Indian government were planning on doing more than just arresting Bhai Sahib. In August 1991, Bhai Sahib was returning from the village of Rakhar, after doing a program there. As Bhai Sahib was returning the police stopped the bus and arrested Bhai Sahib. Bhai Sahib was taken to a secret location by the police.

After this, Bhai Nirmal Singh Chola Sahib never returned home. Bhai Sahib’s wife and four very young children waited all night for Bhai Sahib to return, but he never came. Some said Bhai Sahib was made shaheed in Faridkot and some said that the police had shot Bhai Sahib in the Dharamkot police station. The locals told us what Bhai Nirmal Singh Chola Sahib went through as they had heard from the police officers. Bhai Sahib was taken to Tarn Taran CIA torture centre and blindly tortured. The police played cassettes of Bhai Sahib as they brutally tortured him. After the cruel police officers cut off the tongue of Bhai Sahib also, but Bhai Sahib closed his eye and remained in deep meditation.

Like this the cruel Indian police made Bhai Nirmal Singh Chola Sahib a shaheed, but even today the Kavisheri cassettes of Bhai Sahib are played in the houses of Sikhs all over the world. The Sikh nation bows to Shaheed Bhai Nirmal Singh Chola Sahib for his contribution to the Sikh panth. Today the son of Bhai Sahib, Bhai Balkar Singh Chola Sahib follows the footsteps of his father and continues to sing the courageous vaars of shaheed singhs.
