Shaheed Bhai Amar Singh Tuto Majra


Bhai Amar Singh was born in 1962 from the blessed womb of mother Mata Sudarshan Kaur and father Sardar Baldev Singh, in the village of Tuto Majra, district Hoshiarpur. Bhai Amar Singh was a sibling of seven children – Bibi Bhupinder Kaur, Bhai Parminder Singh, Bhai Amar Singh, Bibi Kulwinder Kaur, Bibi Jaswinder Kaur and Bhai Hardeep Singh.


From a young age he spent his years at his maternal side of the family at the village of Garshankar. His mother’s family were firm believers in the Sikh faith and very dedicated to serving blessed Gursikhs and Sikh congregation. Bhai Amar Singh too positively influenced by this dedicated way of living which he adopted. Bhai Amar Singh then moved back to his paternal family home. Here, he would attend the Harian Bela Gurdwara (Nihang Dal) and became closely acquainted with this religious organisation. Bhai Amar Singh was baptised and blessed with Amrit whilst serving here.


Whilst spending much time with fellow Gursikh individuals he was introduced to the Damdami Taksal, a religious organisation in Mehta. Bhai Amar Singh met his calling here and began staying at the premises, returning home to see his family every two to three months. Here he stayed in the presence of Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale.


In June 1984, Sri Harmandir Sahib was attacked by the Indian government. This impacted the soul of every Sikh including Bhai Sahib. Many of the Jhujaru Singhs who attained martyrdom defending the Sri Harimandir Sahib complex were close friends of Bhai Amar Singh. After the battle of Amritsar, Bhai Amar Singh remained close to Baba Thakur Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale. Bhai Amar Singh also became very close to Baba Maan Singh from the Guru Nanak Dal. Bhai Amar Singh spent a lot of his time in the presence of these blessed souls and recited Gurbani (spiritual scriptures of the Sikhs).


On 18th January 1986, Bhai Amar Singh had just finished his duty of reciting prayers at a Gurdwara in Batala. As he was making his way out, the police were already gathered and mercilessly shot Bhai Amar Singh dead right there and then, thus attaining Shaheedi (martyrdom). Bhai Amar Singh body was riddled with bullets. Baba Thakur Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale took it upon himself to conduct all final rites and funeral arrangements for Bhai Amar Singh. Bhai Amar Singh was a dedicated and selfless individual who served his faith till his last breath.
