Shaheed Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Shatrana

Bhai Sukhwinder Singh was born to the blessed womb of mother, Mata Surjit Kaur and father, Sardar Gurbachan Singh in the village of Shatrana, district Patiala. Bhai Sukhwinder Singh was one of nine children and the fifth eldest of his siblings. He had three sisters and five brothers. Bibi Jinder Kaur, Bibi Rani Kaur, Bibi Bholi Kaur, Bhai Sardool Singh, Bhai Balvir Singh, Bhai Lakhbir Singh and Bhai Bhupinder Singh. Bhai Sukhwinder Singh studied up to the 8th grade at his local village school. Later, Bhai Sukhwinder Singh’s family arranged his marriage with Bibi Rashpal Kaur and were blessed with four children.

 

The events June 1984 had a huge impact on Bhai Sukhwinder Singh. He was already in acquaintance with Bhai Jarnail Singh Shatrana, who led the armed struggle in their vicinity under the Khalistan Commando Force Jhujaru group. Bhai Jarnail Singh Shatrana would regularly come and go to Bhai Sukhwinder Singh’s home as an undisclosed resting place. Bhai Sukhwinder Singh was blessed with Amrit and was baptised to follow the full code of conduct as per the Sikh faith. In this way he continued to serve Bhai Jarnail Singh Shatrana and support the planned Jhujaru actions in the fight for freedom and Khalistan. Bhai Sukhwinder Singh would arrange all the resting and stopping points for Bhai Jarnail Singh Shatrana as well as partake in the planning and arrangements for upcoming actions.

 

The Punjab police had come to know of his involvement in the armed struggle and his efforts to support the cause. The police began to harass all family members and summoned Bhai Sukhwinder Singh to attend the local police station. Bhai Sukhwinder Singh then presented himself on 3rd November 1992. In addition, the police had ordered five other Singhs from the locality, who also presented themselves at the police station.

 

For up to fifteen days, the police inflicted treacherous amount of torture unto the Jhujaru Singhs. The police then ordered and kept Bhai Sukhwinder Singh under remand where he then faced further torture and brutal treatment. Bhai Sukhwinder Singh was kept in prison up until 24th November 1992, when he was then taken by the police to the border of Punjab and Haryana and killed under a fake encounter. Bhai Sukhwinder Singh attained Shaheedi (martyrdom) on this day.

 

Two other Jhujaru Singhs who were arrested the same time, were also killed on the same day attaining martyrdom – Bhai Taranjeet Singh Shatrana and Bhai Amrik Singh Shatrana. The other three Singhs were released.
