Shaheed Bhai Chand Singh

Khalistan Commando Force

Bhai Chand Singh was born in 1969 from the blessed womb of mother Mata Pritam Kaur and father Sardar Harbans Singh, in the village of Bhole Ke, district Fatehgarh Churian. Bhai Chand Singh was the youngest and only brother to two sisters. Bhai Chand Singh was born into a relatively poor family, where low level farming was their only source of income and livelihood. Bhai Chand Singh completed his studies up to tenth grade at his local village school.

Bhai Chand Singh had a genuine love and belief in his faith as a Sikh from a very young age. Even prior to 1984, when the Dharam Yudh Morcha was initiated, he was an active supporter and contributor to the movement. To keep on top of the news and the happenings in the area, he would buy newspapers on a daily basis and stay up late into the night reading and digesting every detail. He was positively influenced by the great Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale.

The attack on Sri Harmandir Sahib in June 1984 had a deep impact on Bhai Chand Singh. This reinforced his faith and knew he had to fight for justice seeking revenge on the perpetrators. Bhai Chand Singh secretly began serving alongside a well-known Jhujaru group, Khalistan Commando Force led by Avtar Singh Rupowali.

Bhai Chand Singh was instrumental in eliminating a police tout from his local village who was known to harass many Jhujaru Singhs. Unfortunately, amidst police interrogation one of the villagers mentioned the name of Bhai Chand Singh as a key player in this murder. Bhai Chand Singh was soon picked up by the police and was taken to the local school, where they brutally tortured Bhai Chand Singh. The police kept on forcing a confession out of Bhai Chand Singh to admit to the murder of this police tout. But Bhai Chand Singh remained steadfast and did not disclose any information nor admitted confession. Bhai Chand Singh later found out that the police had now planned a fake encounter to kill him. Bhai Chand Singh managed to escape by disguising himself as a student. Bhai Chand Singh immediately made his way to the neighbouring village of Rupowali and went underground to serve Khalistan Commando Force under the command of Bhai Avtar Singh Rupowali. Bhai Chand Singh served with great bravery and vigour in many actions undertaken to eliminate perpetrators in the area. His cousin Bhai Nishan Singh also went on to join Khalistan Commando Force.

After some time, the Jhujaru group of Bhai Chand Singh was under the command of Bhai Nishan Singh (Area Commander). At that time Jhujaru Singhs Bhai Nishan Singh Bhole Ke, Bhai Balwinder Singh Mulowali and some other Singhs set permanent residence at Sri Harmandir Sahib. In February 1988, Bhai Chand Singh left Sri Harmandir Sahib to carry out some tasks, when suddenly a police vehicle awaiting outside the complex quickly kidnapped Bhai Chand Singh and took him to the Majitha police station where he was brutally tortured and killed, attaining Shaheedi (martyrdom). Bhai Chand Singh’s body was taken to the village of Bhaumiya on a nearby river bridge and staged a fake encounter.
