Shaheed Bhai Joginder Singh alias Karamjit Singh Patiala

Dasmesh Regiment of Khalistan

Bhai Joginder Singh was born on 1st January 1971, in the house of Sardar Khajan Singh and from the womb of Mata Balbir Kaur in Nava Pind village near Barkiwal, district Batala. The whole family of Sardar Khajan Singh were Amritdhari Sikhs. The family made an honest earning from their farms. Bhai Sahib was the eldest of 3 siblings, second eldest being brother, Bhai Sukhdev Singh and the youngest brother, Bhai Kulwinder Singh. Bhai Sahib studied up to 10th class at the local government school, and passed his 12th class at the secondary school of Ghuman Kalan village. Bhai Sahib then started studying for his BA at a college in Gurdaspur.

At the age of 11 years, Bhai Sahib was fortunate to have met and listened to the speeches of Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale. Bhai Sahib would regularly visit Sri Harimandir Sahib along with his family during the period of Dharam Yudh Morcha. Bhai Sahib was amongst the youngest Sikhs from his village to give a voluntary arrest during the Dharam Yudh Morcha. After passing his 12th class, most of Bhai Sahib’s friends had joined the Sikh freedom movement and were fighting an armed battle against the Indian security forces. As Bhai Sahib started going college, he had witnessed much injustice to push him towards supporting the Jhujaru Singhs. As well as studying for his BA in Gurdaspur, Bhai Sahib also started taking part in Jhujaru actions secretly. Bhai Sahib was studying in second year of BA, when the Punjab police arrested him from home on falsified cases.

In police custody, Bhai Sahib was blindly tortured and in the end was released after the family had paid a heavy bribe to Punjab police officials. After being released on bail, Bhai Sahib had decided to join his Jhujaru brothers completely. He had left his BA studies in the third year of study and Bhai Sahib joined the Dasmesh Regiment under the command of Bhai Seetal Singh Mattewal. Bhai Sahib remained in high spirits within his Jhujaru group and fearlessly carried out Jhujaru actions. Bhai Sahib took part in many assassinations of anti-Sikh elements. Once Bhai Sahib attacked SSP Sita Ram of Batala, who was well known for mistreating the public as well as the Jhujaru Singhs and their families. In this attack, Bhai Sahib and fellow Jhujaru Singhs killed one bodyguard of SSP Sita Ram, while the SSP himself barely escaped. After this Jhujaru action, the Punjab police started hunting for Bhai Sahib like wild hounds. Bhai Sahib carried out Jhujaru actions in Baba Bakala, Sathiala, Kalchian, Raiya and surrounding areas. Bhai Sahib remained in high spirits within the Jhujaru group of Bhai Seetal Singh Mattewal, the police wanted to capture him at any cost. The Punjab police had put 1 Lakh Rupees on Bhai Sahib’s capture.

On 14th December 1992, Bhai Sahib along with 3 other Jhujaru Singhs were resting and planning their next Jhujaru actions in a house in Sultanwind village, district Amritsar. All 4 Jhujaru Singhs were unarmed. Meanwhile, news of their presence reached the police station in village Qila Lal Singh, Jaintipur. The Punjab police assembled officers from other forces and surrounded the house in the village of Sultanwind at midnight on the same day. In the tussle that followed, Bhai Joginder Singh alias Karamjit Singh Patiala and Bhupinder Singh Bhinda alias Dhamaka were arrested by the police. The other two Jhujaru Singh were successful in escaping. The police of Qila Lal Singh took both the arrested Jhujaru Singhs to the interrogation centre of Batala City and started their inhumane torture.

After 6 days of torture, the night of 20th December 1992 witnessed the Punjab police of Qila Lal Singh taking both the prisoners to the bridge of village Choranwali and shooting them down. The case was of course falsely declared as an encounter. After their martyrdom, the police did not return their bodies to their families and cremated them as unidentified corpses in the crematorium of Batala City. When both the families found out about the police’s shameless conduct, they procured the remaining ashes of both the Jhujaru Singhs, performed the appropriate rites and organized Sri Akhand Paath Sahib at their homes.
