Shaheed Bhai Jassa Singh Ghuk

Khalistan Commando Force

In the Sikh struggle started by the 20thcentury purest Sikh, Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale, Bhai Jassa Singh Ghuk’s name is amongst the rare diamonds that preferred to attain martyrdom fighting for freedom rather than live like a slave under the Indian Hindu racist regime.

Bhai Jassa Singh Ghuk was born in the village Mahna Mallian near Sursingh, district Tarn Taran. Bhai Sahib’s fathers name is Sardar Baghel Singh and mother is called Mata Gurbachan Kaur. In this family of 2 sisters and 5 brothers, Bhai Sahib had been called Ghuk from his childhood. Bhai Sahib had a lovable and a greeting personality. Due to Bhai Sahib’s humbleness and kindness, the locals loved him. Bhai Sahib studied up till 5thclass and the Primary School of Manna Mallian. After this Bhai Sahib left school and started helping his father in woodwork to make an honesty living. It was during these days, the Sikhs from this villages started going to Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale to listen to his speeches. Bhai Sahib also joined the local Sikhs and started to attend Sant Ji’s speeches in Amritsar.

Bhai Sahib had been of religious views from start and always recited Gurbani, due to this Bhai Sahib got more close to Sant Ji as their views matched. Bhai Sahib would first get permission from his parents and spend many days with Sant Ji’s Jatha in Amritsar. Bhai Sahib increased his glow and religious studies while staying with Sant Ji, he saw the slavery Sikhs were going through from the eyes of Sant Ji. Bhai Sahib started following the strict Sikh code of conduct and became a Singh who would not miss his nitnem.

Then in June 1984, the Indian army stormed Sri Harimandir Sahib with tanks and cannons. Sri Akaal Takht Sahib was demolished and thousands of Singhs and Singhnia including children and the elderly were massacred mercilessly by the Indian army. Bhai Beant Singh and Bhai Satwant Singh avenged the attack on Sri Harimandir Sahib by assassinating the queen of India, Indira Gandhi. After the assassination of Indira Gandhi, for many days the Hindu extremists backed by political figures killed innocent Sikhs in many big and small cities of India for example, Delhi, Bokaro, Indore and Kanpur. This genocide of Sikhs challenged the Sikh Youth to defend their people. In 1986 senior leaders of Sikh Panth called for Sarbat Khalsa in Amritsar. In the Sarbat Khalsa it was announced that the Sikhs will fight for Khalistan and also the Khalistan Commando Force, a Jhujaru group was established amongst other groups. Bhai Sahib was present in Sri Akaal Takht Sahib during the Sarbat Khalsa and enrolled himself in Khalistan Commando Force under the command of Bhai Manbir Singh Chaheru.

Looking at Bhai Sahibs immerse contribution and numerous actions, he was given the rank of Area Commander of the Border area. Bhai Sahib’s group was of fearless and brave warriors who faught beside him and attained Shaheedi, Jhujaru Singhs such as Bhai Balwinder Singh Gagobua, Bhai Joginder Singh Kanda, Bhai Gurnam Singh Gamma. Once Bhai Sahib, along with two other Jhujaru Singhs were staying at a house in the village of Buchar.  As Bhai Sahib’s bravery was known by the locals, the Indian security forces knew what Bhai Sahib and his group were capable of. Once an informant gave the location of Bhai Sahib and his group to the local Police, the Punjab police reached the Buchar village but was scared to start a battle against the singhs. After a couple of hours of secret meetings amongst the Indian security forces, they decided that they didn’t want to lose their lives and then vacated the village.

In the first week of December 1990, CRRF and Punjab police had been following Bhai Sahib discreetly from the Sursingh village, but Jhujaru Singhs soon found out that they were being followed. At this time Bhai Sahib was with another 2 Jhujaru Singhs, Bhai Avtar Singh Pahuwind and Bhai Ranjit Singh Chal. All 3 Singhs from Sursingh village led the Indian security forces to Mahna Mallian. The Singhs went into one empty house to one side of the village and took their positions. One of the locals who had great amount of respect for Bhai Sahib locked the door of the house from outside with a pad lock so no one would think that anyone is in this house. The Indian security forces found out that Bhai Sahib and the Singhs had reached Mahna Mallian and they opened fire. The Jhujaru Singhs also returned fire and shouted war cries of Bole So Nihal Sat Sri Akaal. One police officer from the Bhikhiwind police station known for his cruel treatment of Sikh youth, Thanedar Jasbir Sio tried to be brave and attempted to break the pad lock on the door, but he could not escape the bullets from the assault rifles of the Jhujaru Singhs who were firing from inside. Upon seeing their Thanedar drop dead on the floor, the Indian security forces got frightened and with the help of BSF they started a new way of serving cruelty to the local Sikhs. The Indian security force grabbed the Sikh youth so they can be used a human shield. The plan was to use petrol from the government vehicles and set fire to the house. In which the Sikhs were fighting from, but to get close to the house they would use innocent Sikhs as human shields and once close to the house also set fire to the house. The petrol from the jeeps was not enough so the Punjab police bought more petrol. Following the plan the enemy managed to set fire to the house from which the Jhujaru Singhs was fighting from. The Singhs continued to fight till the fire reached the Singhs and attained Shaheedi. The sons of Dhan Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj left their lovable memory with locals and had their names written in Sikh history with gold ink.

Due to it being Police rule in Punjab, the Indian security forces had to answer to no one for their evil and unjust acts. The Police got the relatives of Bhai Sahib to put the shaheedi saroops of the singhs onto the CRPF truck and just like Baba Gurbachan Singh Manochahal and Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Sangha these 3 Jhujaru Singhs were also cremated in Tarn Taran under the watch of Indian security forces. Even the ashes of the 3 Jhujaru Singhs were not given to the family members. The family that reached Tarn Taran for cremation were harassed by Punjab police and sent back. The exact date of Bhai Sahib’s Shaheedi can only be attained from the Police FIR, but according to the locals Bhai Sahib attained Shaheedi in the first week of December.

After the Shaheedi of Bhai Sahib, his 2 brothers were also harassed and tortured by the Punjab police. The Indian security forces would regularly trash Bhai Sahib’s family house asking for the location of Bhai Sahib’s weapons but due to finding no weapons, family members of Bhai Sahib would be kept in police station for 10 days and blindly tortured. Till today the bodies of Bhai Sahib’s family members are in pain due to the torture.
