Shaheed Bhai Gurjant Singh Lally alias Sher Singh

Babbar Khalsa

Bhai Gurjant Singh Lally was born in 1965, in the house of a Gursikh farmer, Sardar Gurnam Singh and from the womb of Mata Karnail Kaur in the village of Lashkri Sidhua, near Dhilwan district Patiala. Bhai Sahib was the youngest of 2 sisters and 4 brothers. Bhai Sahib had studied up to 8th class, and after he helped his father in their farms. Bhai Sahib had followed his family’s tradition and had taken Amrit in his childhood. Due to being a Gursikh, young and brave, Bhai Sahib came into the eyes of the local police tout. In 1990, Bhai Sahib’s area was very active in Jhujaru activities. Babbar Khalsa and Khalistan Commando Force was active in the Patiala region.

During this time, Jhujaru Singhs burnt down shops that sold alcohol and Bhai Sahib was framed and wanted in this case due to the local police tout. Bhai Sahib was arrested and spent 6 months in Bathinda jail. In jail Bhai Sahib met Bhai Hari Singh (village Lehra Dhurkot, Bathinda) of Babbar Khalsa and from there on, Bhai Sahib remained in contact with the Jhujaru Singhs of this group. Bhai Sahib was bailed thanks to a lawyer by the name of Bhai Bhatti, who fought the cases of many Jhujaru Singhs for free of charge and was later made a martyr of Khalistan by the Punjab police.

After being bailed, the Punjab police started to harass Bhai Sahib and his family. Bhai Sahib would automatically be a suspect in every Jhujaru activity that happened in his area, for which he would be arrested and tortured. Due to being an honourable Gursikh, Bhai Sahib soon started doing actions with the Jhujaru Singhs of Babbar Khalsa. Bhai Sahib did actions under the command of Bhai Hari Singh in secret. Bhai Sahib was then framed in a murder case of village Chunga, for which he was arrested and jail for ¾ months. Bhai Bhatti once again fought Bhai Sahib’s case for free and Bhai Sahib was bailed. Like this the struggle with the Indian security forces continued.

Finally, Bhai Sahib had tolerated the injustices of the Punjab police more than enough, and decided to leave home to join his Jhujaru brothers. The Punjab police were now unable to get their hands-on Bhai Sahib and instead started targeting his family even more. Sardar Gurnam Singh and Bhai Sahib’s brothers would regularly be arrested and tortured at different police stations. Even the women were not spared by the Punjab police, Mata Karnail Kaur and Bhai Sahib’s sisters were also arrested many times and take to the police station and after which they are released. Bhai Sahib house had been damaged also, the doors, gates and dishes were broken everytime the police came.

Within the armed struggle for Khalistan, Bhai Sahib did Jhujaru actions with many Singhs. Some of them were, Bhai Hari Singh (village Lehra Dhurkot, Bathinda), Bhai Sukhdev Singh Tana (village Dhilwan, Bathinda), Bhai Harbhajan Singh Deliyanwali (district Bathinda), Bhai Naib Singh (Gill Khurd, Bathinda), Bhai Dayadeep Singh (son of Sardar Gurdev Singh, village Bheni Maharaj), Bhai Satnam Singh Bachi (village Kanneke, Barnala), Bhai Gurdev Singh and his brother (village Bhurj Dhilwan, Bathinda), Bhai Gurbhog Singh Bhoga (village Bham Kalan, Mansa), Bhai Labh Singh (village Mehraj, near Ful), Bhai Kulwant Singh (village Gumty Kalan).

Bhai Sahib had recently been released on bail. The Ful police force arrested Bhai Sahib, and was blindly tortured. Then later Bhai Sahib was made a martyr in a false encounter staged by the police in the village of Chak Bhaktu near Bucho Mandi, district Bathinda on the night of 7th April 1992. During his torture Bhai Sahib shouted war cries Bole So Nihal Sat Sri Akaal and Khalistan Zindabad, he also swore at the cruel police officers which made the enemy even more angry.
