Shaheed Bhai Charanjit Singh Sujjon

Babbar Khalsa

In the 20th century Sikh Freedom Movement, many Sikhs took part to break off the chains of slavery. Within these lions is one lion by the name of Shaheed Bhai Charanjit Singh Sujjon Babbar alias Maruti.

While Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Bindranwale faught till his dying breath, with hand full of singhs that were loyal to the Sikh nation, people like Harcharan Singh Longowal put their hands up and walking out by stepping on the dead bodies of the singhs and singhnia that had faught against the invading Indian army. Harcharan cowardly compromised with the Indian government rather than stay at Sri Harimandir Sahib and fight against the oppression and invasion of the Indian army. Then the warriors, Bhai Beant Singh and Bhai Satwant Singh punished then Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi for her injustice on Sikhs. if Longowal could shake hands with Indira Gandhi, then he shook hands with her son, Rajiv Gandhi and turned a blind eye to millions of singhs being burnt alive and singhnia being gang raped all over India, in cities such as Delhi, Kanpur, Gujarat, Pune, Calcutta and many more. Harcharan Singh Longowal enjoyed the pleasures of Rajiv Gandhi’s government and did not have anything to say about the innocent killings of Sikh men and women. On one side Sikhs were mercilessly killed all over India and on the other side Longowal and Rajiv Gandhi were planning on how to win the next elections.

But true singhs of Guru Gobind Singh Ji would rise and take revenge for the planned mass murder of innocent Sikhs one group in particular. Babbar Khalsa stepped in to the battlefield to fight against the Indian security forces and get justice. Bhai Charanjit Singh Sujjon made the decision of defending the honour of Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Bindranwale and to carry forward the Sikh struggle which was started by Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Bindranwale.

Bhai Charanjit Singh Sujjon was born in the house of Sardar Pakhal Singh and from the womb of Mata Tarsem Kaur in the village of Sujjon, district Nawashaher on 15th June 1967. Bhai Sahib had 3 sisters, Bibi Nirmal Kaur, Bibi Kuldeep Kaur, Bibi Rajinder Kaur and 1 younger brother, Bhai Hardev Singh. As the police was harassing the Sikh youth of Punjab Bhai Hardev Singh stayed away from home and could not properly study as Mata Tarsem Kaur did not want him to be victimised by the Punjab police. Bhai Sahib studied up till 8th class at the primary school of village Mahil Kalan. After studying Bhai Sahib learnt driving from Sardar Nirmal Singh Carwala from the village from Sujjon, and Bhai Sahib then went to Ludhiana to do a driving job.

In Ludhiana Bhai Sahib met singhs of Babbar Khalsa, Bhai Sahib made his mind up on dedicating his life to the Sikh Freedom Movement and the mission of Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Bindranwale. After witnessing the attacks on Sri Harimandir Sahib, Sri Akaal Takht and other gurudwaras by Indira Gandhi and Lal Kishan Adhvani, Bhai Sahib wanted justice to be served. But justice was not going to be given to the Sikhs through the Indian courts, instead justice had to be taken. Bhai Sahib joined the Babbar Khalsa and now getting justice seemed possible.

Bhai Sahib said:

“Amritsar da khooni saka dekh ke,

Gai jaag singh nu aa,

Nahi shadna jalim Indira nu,

Dena jionde nu mar muka.”

Bhai Sahib was a greeter and a cheerful person, who treated everybody equally. Whenever Bhai Sahib did actions with the singhs of Babbar Khalsa, Bhai Sahib would use his intelligence and got away from the scene of action untouched. That’s how Bhai Sahib got the name Maruti. Bhai Sahib ripped all of his certificates and photos. Bhai Sahib told his younger brother, Bhai Hardev Singh to take care of the family and it’s his responsibility to look after the house. Bhai Sahib also told him to get the younger sister, Bibi Rajinder Kaur married as the eldest 2 were already married. Bibi Rajinder Kaur was very much loved by her brothers, as she made food for them late at night and also she would chapattis with salt, so she could save the sabji for her brothers. Bhai Sahib told Bhai Hardev Singh that the responsibility of their house if of Bhai Hardev Singh and the responsibility of the panthic house is of Bhai Sahib himself.

Soon someone had given the name of Bhai Sahib to the police to save himself. The police arrested Bhai Sahib and blindly tortured him but Bhai Sahib did not give any information to the police. For this reason the singhs that are still alive today, feel proud of him. The police started arresting and torturing Sikh youths from the village of Sujjon to see if they can get more information on Bhai Sahib’s network.

The police gave up on obtaining information from Bhai Sahib, they realised that Bhai Sahib will not speak against any of the Khadku Singhs. After some more days of torture, the Kapurthala police killed Bhai Sahib in a fake encounter. The police did not give the dead body of Bhai Sahib to the family. Some months later the father of Bhai Sahib, Sardar Pakhal Singh also passed away, Sardar Pakhal Singh had been saddened with the loss of his brave and elder son.

People, who celebrate Independence Day on 15th August, are stupid and fooled. Innocent Sikhs are being killed all over India, is that freedom? Ask the answer of this question from the sisters who have lost their only brother to the fake encounters of the police.

Bhai Sahib gave all his wealth and health to the Sikh nation, but today his family are struggling making ends meet. Bhai Hardev Singh grinds grains to make a living and feed his family. The banks are also asking for false bank payments that the family doesn’t know anything about.

In the memory of Shaheed Bhai Charanjit Singh Sujjon and Shaheed Bhai Sukhbir Singh Khalsa, a shaheedi smagam was held on 18th September 2009 in the village of Sujjon, district Nawashaher. This smagam was held with the help of Shromani Akali Dal Panch Pardhani and Dal Khalsa. At the smagam Bhai Tarsem Singh Moranwali came to sing vaaran of these true Sikh warriors.
