Shaheed Bhai Avtar Singh Sanghna

Khalistan Liberation Force

Shaheed Bhai Avtar Singh Sanghna and his brother, Shaheed Bhai Jaswant Singh Sanghna alias Jassa were born to the blessed womb of mother, Mata Joginder Kaur in the house of father, Sardar Sewa Singh Sekhon in the village of Sanghna, district Amritsar. Their respective date of birth is unknown. They had two younger brothers Bhai Kulwant Singh, Bhai Lakhwinder Singh and a sister who was the youngest, Bibi Malkit Kaur. The family earned a livelihood in agriculture, where they farmed their family-owned land.

In June 1984, the Indian Government attacked Sri Harmandir Sahib, the most sacred religious place for the Sikh Nation. Both Bhai Avtar Singh Sekhon and Bhai Jaswant Singh Sekhon were deeply hurt and affected by this heinous attack on the Sikh Nation. During them days, Bhai Jaswant Singh got caught up in a case and was arrested by the police, then sent to jail. It was in jail where Bhai Jaswant Singh came into contact with the Jhujaru Singhs. He was positively influenced and understood the impact this incident had on the nation and that the Indian Government could never be forgiven. There was no doubt that an independent Sikh homeland was the only answer.

Upon release from jail, Bhai Jaswant Singh began to serve with the Jhujaru Singhs and was dedicated to the movement. Bhai Jaswant Singh spearheaded and participated in many Jhujaru actions, serving justice to many perpetrators and shone the flag of Khalistan on his victories. Suddenly, the police found him and surrounded him. There was no way out, he was taken to an interrogation centre near the area of Chheharta. He was brutally tortured for three days and he was killed in a fake encounter on 21st April 1990, attaining Shaheedi (martyrdom).

After his martyrdom, his brother Bhai Avtar Singh left home and began serving with the Jhujaru Singhs of Khalistan Liberation Force. Like Bhai Jaswant Singh, Bhai Avtar Singh too fought valiantly in many Jhujaru actions and served justice to many traitors and the heinous police officials who mercilessly tortured many Sikh youth.

Their family had to pay the wrath of their involvement and participation in the fight for Khalistan. The police continuously harassed the family. As well as serving with the Khalistan Liberation Force, Bhai Avtar Singh left Punjab and set up camp in Uttar Pradesh. Then one day in November 1990, Bhai Avtar Singh had a fierce encounter with the police near Pilibhit of UP and he was killed, attaining Shaheedi (martyrdom). Seven to Eight other Jhujaru Singhs were also martyred along with him. Bhai Avtar Singh’s body was never found nor any details shared with the family. The Sikh nation is forever in debt to these brave warriors who gave their lives for the cause.
