Shaheed Bhai Amarjit Singh Jheeta alias Baba

Khalistan Commando Force

Bhai Amarjit Singh was born on 20th July 1963 to the blessed womb of Mata Jarnail Kaur and father Sardar Darshan Singh in the village of Hardokhanpur, Hoshiarpur. He was a sibling of four brothers and one sister, eldest Bhai Harbhajan Singh, Bhai Amarjit Singh Jheeta, Bhai Dilbagh Singh, Bhai Gurdev Singh and the youngest Bibi Sarabjit Kaur. Bhai Amarjit Singh studied up to tenth grade at his local village school. Bhai Amarjit Singh was a strong believer in his faith and had become a baptised Khalsa from a very young age.

Following the attack of Sri Harmandir Sahib, Bhai Amarjit Singh was deeply impacted and could not bear the pain. He decided to join those who spoke out against the injustices and pledged to fight for freedom. Bhai Amarjit Singh attended a convention where police surrounded the crowds and arrested many Singhs. Bhai Amarjit Singh was one of them and was imprisoned for up to three months in Amritsar jail. Giani Puran Singh Ji supported his release on bail.

On his return home Bhai Amarjit Singh aligned himself to known Jhujaru Singhs in the area and became active in the freedom fighter movement. He had joined Khalistan Commando Force under the direct command of Jathedar Manbir Singh Chaheru. On many occasions he was arrested by the police and brutally tortured, where his body was left with wounds and scars. On one occasion the police were taking pleasure in torturing Bhai Amarjit Singh and in doing so, they picked up a small stool and use it to hit Bhai Amarjit Singh but with the cushioned side. Bhai Amarjit Singh laughingly said, “Why don’t you straighten the stool and hit me properly.” On another occasion where the police had arrested him and again, he laughed as if he was a regular family visitor to the jail. So before, the police began to torture him, he said, “Why not offer me a drink of water first then feel free to commence the hospitable torture.” It just showed his patience and bravery that he was able to endure such multiple brutal torture with humour and strength.

He would serve justice to many perpetrators under guise. Once in the village of Kotli Khan Singh, near Jalandhar, there was a confrontation with the police and Bhai Amarjit Singh managed to escape along with his fellow Jhujaru Singhs. That same evening on 3rd November 1988, the Jhujaru Singhs including Bhai Amarjit Singh arrived at the village of Randhawa Masanda near Jalandhar. The police happened to track them down and had followed them. It resulted in a second confrontation and in a battle of bullets Bhai Amarjit Singh Jheeta alias Baba attained Shaheedi (martyrdom).
